I always try and support my high school alma mater, Seabury Hall, whether it’s going to the annual Seabuy Hall Craft Fair or writing a check for the alumni class donation. Always held on the Saturday (May 9th) before Mother’s Day, the craft fair is the perfect place to secure a last minute gift for mom. Each year the craft fair brings thousands of tourists and visitors to beautiful Upcountry Maui to enjoy the arts and crafts of some of the islands best artisans.

Every May Olukai holds their annual Ho’olaule’a, it celebrates the Hawaiian culture and the traditions that surround the community. The word literally means “celebration”, but can also be an expression of gratitude. The even attracts elite competition and family-friendly cultural activities, gathering some of the world’s best SUP, OC1, & OC2 paddlers to charge the legendary 8-mile Maliko downwind run. Held at Kanaha Beach Park on May 1-3. More info can be found: at www.olukai.com.

Go on down to Flatbread Co.’s benefit for Haku Baldwin Center, enjoy the freshest and most organic wood-fired pizza on Maui. Your dinner is your donation! Tuesday, May 5, 2015 (yes, that’s Cinco de Mayo!) down in Paia is where all the action is going down. They will even have a silent auction with something for everyone. 5:00-10:00 p.m. Silent auction starts at 5:00 p.m. and the event runs until 10:00 p.m. Come out and support a great local charity.

Mbloom is pleased to host the 3rd annual MaiTai Maui Tech Night, hosted a the Maui Tropical Plantation on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 from 5-10pm. The event is a unique and innovative event where an investor pitch contest and promising ventures from the local start-up community will have the opportunity to pitch to investors from Silicon Valley. The Maui Arts and Cultural Center is proud to host the 7th annual Maui Brewers Festival, a tribute to craft brews from Hawai‘i and beyond! The event is a fundraiser for the MACC’s community and arts education programs.VIP Happy Hour starts 2:30 pm; Main Event Festival 4-7 pm. Enjoy great beers accompanied by a wide assortment of pupu style foods, all accompanied by live music with local bands. Date: Saturday, May 16th, 2015. Time: 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

The Maui Brewing Company will be hosting the benefit night for the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. Maui Brewing has demonstrated a strong commitment to the local economy and the environment. MFBRP is working to protect Maui’s native forest birds and their habitats. On benefit nights, half the pub profits from house beers sold will go towards protecting native birds. The event begins at 6pm and goes until 10pm. Where: Kahana Gateway Shopping Center, just north of Lahaina. Address is 4405 Honoapiilani Highway, Lahaina, Maui 96761.

 Culture & the Arts

The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua will host the 23rd Annual Celebration of the Arts. A gathering of Hawaii’s most respected artisans, educators, cultural practitioners, speakers and entertainers over the weekend of May 8-10. The theme for the 2015 event is still yet to be officially announced.  The theme last year, “Ko Makou Alanui Kupuna…Our Ancestral Paths”. It focused on  how we can learn from the past to positively affect the future. Visit http://www.kapaluacelebrationofthearts.com for more specifics.

The 2015 Maui Matsuri festival celebrates Japanese & Okinawan cultural entertainment, food & craft booths, demonstrations & exhibits, cultural crafts and games for kids, manga & art contest, hanafuda contest, eating contests, Cosplay (costume) contest, video-gaming, obon dancing, and more.
This year makes the 15th annual Maui Matsuri. “On” kanji is the theme of this year’s festival to commemorate a year of reflection and gratitude. Admission is free at the UH Maui college on Saturday, May 16th from 2:00-9:00pm.

 

Da Taste of Keokea is a culinary fest in scenic Upcountry Maui. The nonprofit Keokea Homestead Farm Lots Association hosts the inaugural event. The menu features pastele sausage; pa‘i ‘ai chicharron; kalua pork with watercress; poke; chow fun, and pastele stew. Also, tickle the tastebuds with Vietnamese hot noodle dish, pho and salads; roast turkey; cheeseburgers, and french fries. To round out the culinary menu, they willl have Kahakuloa rice pudding; banana bread; root beer floats; iced coffee and mamaki drinks, and more! Event organizers promote Zero Waste, and urge diners optionally to bring their own reusable plates, bowls, cups and silverware. Also, diners may consider bringing beach chairs, mats, warm clothing, sweaters and/or jackets. Keokea Marketplace on Kula Highway. From 1:00-6:00pm on Saturday, May 16th.
