Best South Maui Beaches

Charley Young Beach

The beach is actually on the northern edge of Kamaole I, it is named after a man whose house was situated just above the beach for many years. The beach is favored by the local population not only for it’s convenience in Kihei, but also for it’s fishing. Usually you can see fishing poles for days as they are meticulously lined up on the beach waiting for a catch. If beach volley ball is your thing, then this is the place to be as there is always a game in progress.

The sand on the beach is extremely soft and fine with golden tones. The sand carries right into the ocean and provides a welcoming entry into the ocean without worrying about stepping on rocks or coral. This beach is also great for swimming because it is usually on the calmer side. I suggest going early in the morning to avoid the afternoon tradewinds. It is also very popular choice among the South Maui stand up paddling community.

Kama’ole I, II, III

The trio of Kama’ole beaches, or as the locals call it Kam I, II, or III, are some of Kihei’s most recognizable as well as most popular beaches. There are many condos located across from the beach that make great second homes, in particular we have a fantastic listing across Kam III. All beaches provide some seating areas with the grass field at Kam III being a popular choice for birthday parties, family gatherings, or any kind of occasion. All three of the beaches house public picnic tables, restrooms and outdoor showers. They also have a free parking lot or adjacent free street parking at each beach.

Kam I, is the most Northern Kama’ole Beach and it is the largest of the three. Kam II is a bit on the smaller side, but on good days, the waves make for the perfect shore break. As i’ve said before, Kam III is the spot for South Maui Locals. The area’s huge lawn is perfect for barbecuing, games, or even huge jumpie castles. The Southern most Kamaole Beaches are smaller, but nice. During the peak times of the year, these little beaches get very crowded.

Keawakapu, Wailea

Parking here can be a real pain in the butt, there are two lots to choose from. The first choice is the lot just off of South Kihei, but it is a bit of a walk to the beach. The second choice is the little tiny parking lot fronting the beach, it is a great choice to park here if you can manage to score a space. The world famous white sands of Keawakapu stretch all the way from the Mana Kai resort (located on South Kihei Road) to the very beginning of Wailea. There are some great Mana Kai condos for sale ranging in price from $1.2M up to $1.6M. The beachfront homes that are within 50 yards of the water are some of the most valuable real estate on the island. At the moment, there is an estate available for $22.8 million. If you prefer the ease of a condo, then Wailea Eakahi is the perfect fit, it’s community pool is just a stones throw to Keawakapu.

This incredible stretch of beach is a great place to spend an entire day and from which to launch yourself on a great walk. I suggest hiking (I use hike hear loosely, but it will definetly feel like a hike) beach all the way up to the Grand Wailea and beyond. The walk is maybe 2 miles in one direction (towards the Polo Club, deeper into Wailea) and then, past that to some great little pocket beaches.

Palauea Bay

Personally, I rank Palauea Bay so highly because of the lack of people that use the beach, let alone even know about it. Palauea means lazy which is exactly how you feel once you get there, the sand is so inviting that you just want to nap there all day. Located in the neighborhood of Keahou at Makena and just down the road from the exclusive One Palauea Bay, this beach is the definition of the perfect Makena Beach. The soft white sand and the glassy ocean water are a joy to relax in, it also does not hurt that you are surrounded by some of the best real estate on the Island. Since the bay is recessed, the wind does not usually whip around like it might at other beaches.

Makena Beach (a.k.a Big Beach), South Maui

Just off of Makena Alanui Road is quite possibly the best beach in Hawaii. Big Beach stands heads and shoulders above some of Maui’s best beaches. You’ll find just under a mile of perfect sand, the beautifu backdrop of lower Haleakala, and water that’s a virbant blue green. It is one of the largest beaches in Maui, extending nearly 2/3 of a mile long and 100 yards wide of golden Maui sand. The tourists usually just come to swim or snorkel an experience Maui’s most pristine waters, picnic in the shade, or simply sunbathe on the seemingly endless expanse of sand. There are two parking lots that are maintained by the county.

Locals love Big Beach solely for its greatest asset, the inclined shoreline which allows for the best shore break on Maui. On a crowded day where the swell is pumping, kids and some young adults come to skimboard, body board, or body surf the day away. Surfing is sort of looked down upon here at this beach because it is not the right conditions. However, a more recent trend has began to develop, there are some groms (local slang for surfers) who do surf the shore break with foam boards and do quite well. Please use caution for those with children or inexperienced ocean swimmers when there’s large swell. These waves are deceptively powerful and can dump you into the sand without notice.
