Maui’s Best Beaches – Top 3 Beach Walks

Best Beaches Maui

The second installment to the “Best Beaches on Maui” series will focus on my 3 favorite strips of sand to take a stroll.  Maui is famous for its beautiful, long beaches, and these three certainly fit that description. I chose these because they are all far away from each other, which highlights the fact that great walks are all over the island.  I will also recommend the best times of day to visit each for maximum enjoyment!

Keawakapu Beach

I really had a tough time choosing the top South Maui location, as a couple of my favorite beaches in the entire world are located within only a few miles. While Wailea Beach and Makena would certainly be phenomenal choices, I decided on the less-crowded (but equally stunning) Keawakapu Beach.  The beachfront homes on this stretch of sand are some of the most luxurious on island, with many in the $10 million-plus range.  A walk along the shore at sunset is my favorite, as a myriad of pastels and cool ocean breeze engulf the senses.  This is also one of the more private beaches on the south shore, which makes it a favorite spot for couples to exchange their vows.

Ka’anapali Beach

Consistently voted one of the top beaches in Hawaii and the U.S., Ka’anapali (or “Dig Me” Beach) is one of the most happening spots on island.  Diving, Sailing, Boat Tours, Fishing, Snorkeling, Volleyball – there’s really something for everyone.  The long pathway that borders all the resorts and Ka’anapali beachfront condos is actually one of the longest beach walks on island.  I love spending the day just walking as far as I can people-watching, and when it gets too hot, I channel my inner-child and jump off Black Rock!

Baldwin Beach

Just in front of many of the Spreckelsville golf course homes is my favorite North Shore beach, Baldwin.  Since its located on the other side of the island, away from the resorts of South and West Maui, this beach isn’t frequented too often by visitors, one of the reasons why I feel it’s so special.  My favorite time of day to walk is at dawn, before the sun has risen above Haleakala and the howling trade-winds descend to the valley. You rarely see more than a handful of people at this hour, making the surroundings that much more serene.  Watching the sunrise on Maui is a must, and if you can’t make it to the top of Haleakala, Baldwin is quite the consolation.

With all the wonderful beaches on this island, I surely left out some amazing choices.  What are some of your favorites to walk on?  How about the best ones to bring dogs?  We’d love to hear your “go-to” spots in the comments below.  See you at the beach!

  1. Keawakapu is just minutes away from our Maui Meadows home so I’m there a few times a week, walking, swimming, sunset watching. Sometimes I need to pinch myself, enjoying all this magnificence. It’s ours to delight in! That’s the beauty of Maui: no private beaches anywhere!

  2. @ Michael – We love to bring our black lab, Cruz, to Baldwin. There are so many other friendly dogs and a seemingly endless stretch of sand for them to play on!

  3. @ Mia – So so true Mia! We are extremely blessed to call Maui home, any time I feel a little down in the dumps, I look at my surroundings and realize that we live on the best island in the world! Maui is our oyster, eat it up 😉

  4. I am going to share this with all of my friends! Continue the great work. Everyone ought to take the time to put up reviews of beaches as good as this one!
