WOW! Wailea on Wednesdays electrify The Shops

The Shops – An Overview

Whether you’re staying in a Wailea condo, one of the world-class resorts, or traveling from another part of the island, there is only one place you need to visit if you are in the mood for shopping.  Conveniently located in the heart of Wailea (between the Wailea Beach Villas, the Grand Wailea, and the Marriott Resort), The Shops at Wailea is a great outdoor mall comprised of high-end shops, restaurants, convenient stores and galleries.  Some of the country’s most popular luxury stores are found here, including Louis Vitton, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Tiffany & CO, and  Fendi.  After indulging in the stores, save some time for an amazing meal at one of the restaurants.  My favorites are Longhi’s and Tommy Bahama’s (pictured below)- they serve up great food and drinks on beautiful outdoor patios and offer a fun happy hour with very affordable deals.

WOW! Wailea on Wednesdays

Just over a year ago, in August of 2009, The Shops started offering free, open-air concerts every Wednesday for the residents and visitors of South Maui to enjoy.   The music and dance always highlights the polynesian culture so prevalent in Maui.  From slack-key and steel guitars, to fire and hula dancers, the shows offer authentic Polynesian entertainment that you would see at a traditional Hawaiian Luau.  There are 5 Wednesdays this September and each date offers a different performance with some of Hawaii’s best musicians and dancers.  All shows start at 6:30 pm and last until 8:00 pm.

September 1Taimane Gardner, “The Diamond of Waikiki,” is a 21 year old ukulele virtuoso that has traveled across the mainland and into Japan spreading her sound.  She recently completed her second full length studio album, LIFE.

September 8Te Au Moana Polynesian Revue and Fireknife Dance.  The entertainment for the Marriott Wailea Luau, Te Au Moana tells the legends of the people of Maui and the Pacific through lavish songs and dances.

September 15Bobby Moderow Jr, slack key guitar master and member of the Na Hoku Hanohano award winning band, “Maunalua.”  As a talented musician who has toured for over 15 years, Bobby recently contributed on two Grammy nominated albums, “Slack-Key Kings,” in 2008 and “Slack-Key Kings Vol. 2” in 2009.

September 22 – KHEI presents Leokane Pryor, CJ “Boom” Helekahi & Glenwood Tolentino.  Some of the most talented musicians to come out of Hana, this trio of performers play traditional Hawaiian guitar and ukulele while Pryor adds a beautiful falsetto.

September 29Kauna’Oa, a traditional Hawaiian trio from our neighbor island of Lanai.

WOW! is one of the many reasons that makes Maui such a wonderful place to live or vacation.  In this world, there are many types of luxury destinations.  Lots offer beautiful surroundings.  Some are known for their great nightlife, shopping and social scene.  Others, for the multitude of day time activities easily available.  Yet, there are very few places (let alone islands) in the world that combine these as perfectly as Maui.  I consider myself extremely blessed to call this island home — so if you are looking to become a full-time resident, or are browsing for the perfect spot for a second home, be sure to click here to search for your Maui dream home or vacation condo!

Looking at all this local entertainment on hand makes me realize how many talented artists call Hawaii home.  What are some of your favorites?  Uncle Willie K sure comes to my mind.  A weekly performer at Mulligan’s on the Blue in Wailea, this amazing entertainer just added 12 dinner shows this month due to popular demand.  I’ve been on a few occasions and thoroughly enjoyed myself each time.  Besides Willie K, ukulele maestro Jake Shimabukuro and vocalist Keali’i Reichel are surely some of the most musicians around.  Finally, let us know if there are any other great music events going around the island that we should highlight.  After all, music is the language of the heart and understood everywhere.

Uncle Willie K

Willie K is certainly one of Maui’s best entertainers. A talented musician, hilarious comedian, and amazing story-teller all wrapped into one happy Hawaiian!

  1. I love Wailea Wednesdays! I try and go every week, doing what I need to do at the shops, ending with a delicious dinner and a night cap. Purely perfect! A recommendation: Sisters is a fab boutique and salon with the most talented woman on island to serve you
